Privacy Policy
Last updated 29 July 2026
In one line: we collect the minimum needed to sign you in, keep your subscription working, and understand how the app is used. Your breathing sessions stay on your phone. We do not sell your data, we do not show ads, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
The short version
- Signing in creates an account with your email address or phone number.
- We use analytics to see which screens people use and where they get stuck.
- Your session history, streaks and profile photo live on your device, not our servers.
- Purchases are handled by Apple; we only see whether your subscription is active.
- You can delete your account, and everything with it, from inside the app.
Who we are
Somnia (“Somnia”, “we”, “us”) provides the Somnia guided-breathing application for iOS and Android and the website at projectsomnia.com. This policy explains what we do with personal information when you use the app or the site.
For the purposes of the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation, Somnia is the data controller for the information described below.
What we collect
| Category | Examples | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Account information | Email address, phone number, Apple or Google account identifier, a user ID we generate | You, when you sign in |
| Subscription status | Whether you have an active subscription, which plan, trial eligibility, purchase and renewal events | RevenueCat, from the App Store |
| Product analytics | Screens viewed, buttons tapped, time spent on a screen, where you left the app, sessions started, completed or abandoned, errors and crashes | Collected automatically as you use the app |
| Device and technical data | Device model, operating system version, app version, screen size, language, IP address | Collected automatically |
| Support correspondence | Anything you write to us and the address you write from | You, if you contact us |
Analytics events are associated with your user ID, which means they are linked to your identity rather than fully anonymous. We use them to improve the product, not to build an advertising profile.
What stays on your device
A deliberate amount of what Somnia knows about you never leaves your phone. The following is stored locally and is not uploaded to us:
- Your session history — dates, durations, whether you completed a session, breath counts.
- Your streaks, statistics and unlocked achievements.
- Your name, age range, bedtime and sleep goal from the setup questions.
- Your profile photo. Choosing one requires photo-library permission; the image is stored on the device and is never sent to us.
- Your bedtime reminders. These are scheduled locally by your operating system — they are not push notifications sent from a server.
Because this data is local, deleting the app removes it. It also means we do not back it up: if you move to a new phone, this history does not follow you.
Why we collect it
| Purpose | Legal basis (UK/EU GDPR) |
|---|---|
| Creating and securing your account | Performance of a contract |
| Unlocking the app for active subscribers and restoring purchases | Performance of a contract |
| Understanding how the app is used so we can improve it | Legitimate interests |
| Diagnosing crashes and errors | Legitimate interests |
| Responding to your support requests | Legitimate interests / performance of a contract |
| Complying with tax, accounting and legal obligations | Legal obligation |
Who we share it with
We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We use a small number of processors who handle data on our instructions:
| Provider | What they do | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Google Firebase | Authentication | Email address or phone number, account identifiers |
| RevenueCat | Subscription management | Your user ID and purchase/renewal events from the App Store |
| Mixpanel | Product analytics | Your user ID, app events, device and technical data |
| Apple | App distribution, payment processing, Sign in with Apple | Handled under Apple’s own privacy policy; we never see your payment details |
We may also disclose information where we are legally required to, or to establish or defend legal claims. If Somnia is ever acquired or merged, personal information may transfer as part of that transaction — you would be notified.
Advertising and tracking
Somnia contains no advertising, no ad networks and no ad SDKs. We do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites, which is why the app does not ask for App Tracking Transparency permission. Any earlier version of this policy that referred to advertising partners was inherited boilerplate and did not describe this product.
Health data
The Somnia phone app does not read from or write to Apple Health.
If you use the Apple Watch companion, it reads your heart rate during a session and records session data to Apple Health with your explicit permission, granted separately on the watch. That information is held by Apple Health on your devices under Apple’s privacy controls. Any summary shown in the app’s morning debrief is derived on your device. We do not receive your heart-rate data, and it is never used for advertising or shared with third parties.
You can revoke Health access at any time in the Apple Health app under Sharing → Apps.
How long we keep it
- Account data — until you delete your account, then removed.
- Analytics events — up to 24 months, then deleted or aggregated so they no longer identify you.
- Subscription and transaction records — as long as required for tax and accounting purposes, typically seven years.
- Support correspondence — up to 24 months after the request is resolved.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct information that is wrong.
- Delete your information.
- Receive a copy in a portable format.
- Object to, or ask us to restrict, processing based on legitimate interests.
- Withdraw consent where we relied on it, without affecting what happened before.
- Complain to your data protection authority. In the UK that is the ICO; in the EU, your national authority.
California residents. Under the CCPA/CPRA you have the rights above and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising them. We have not sold or shared personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising in the preceding twelve months, and we do not knowingly do so for anyone under 16.
To exercise any of these, email privacy@projectsomnia.com. We will respond within one month. We may need to verify your identity first.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from inside the app: Settings → Delete account. This permanently deletes your account and erases your locally-stored sessions, streaks and achievements. It cannot be undone.
Deleting your account does not cancel your subscription. Apple, not Somnia, bills you — cancel separately under Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your device, or via the app’s Settings → Manage subscription.
If you would rather we did it for you, email privacy@projectsomnia.com.
Children
Somnia is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with information, contact us and we will delete it. Where local law sets a higher age of digital consent (16 in parts of the EU), that age applies instead.
International transfers
Our providers process data in the United States and elsewhere. Where information is transferred out of the UK or European Economic Area, we rely on the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses, together with additional safeguards where needed.
Security
Data in transit is encrypted with TLS. Access to production systems is limited to people who need it. Your session history is stored in the app’s private storage on your device, which other apps cannot read. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security — but we will notify you and the relevant regulator if a breach affects you and the law requires it.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page when our practices change, and revise the “last updated” date at the top. If a change materially affects how we use your information, we will give you notice in the app or by email before it takes effect.
